Have you ever thought about the life on the road of a professional athlete?

Phoenix - soccerI would guess that most people think professional athletes lead a charmed life. Some do; many don’t!

In a no-holds-barred discussion, you will meet team members of Phoenix’s new professional soccer club–the Phoenix FC Wolves. They’ll tell you how they prepare for games and their training secrets. And yes, they will even tell you what they are reading when they are on the road!

For the soccer club, 2013 marks its inaugural professional season as the newest member of the United Soccer League’s PRO division.

Meet us in the Assembly Room of the Southeast Regional Library on Tuesday, June 25 at 3 p.m. to talk with some of the players. The program is geared for school-age children and adults.

SERL is located at 775 N. Greenfield Rd., Gilbert.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Hero of the Month

Kudos for a job well done!

Town of Gilbert, Arizona

RRRHeroJune.jpgThis month we would like to celebrate one of our own!  Mark Hunsaker, a Vietnam War veteran and Arizona native, has been a Town employee for the past 17 years.  Mark and his wife, who he met while they were employed by GM as high-speed run test car drivers, are parents to six children, 16 grandchildren and foster parents to many others.

In keeping with Mark’s generous nature, he volunteered himself and several of his children to participate in the planting of “Sustainability Gardens” for residents of the Gila/Pima Indian Reservation.    Now three years later, Mark (with occasional assistance from his children and grandchildren) continues to donate up to 30 hours each week, assisting Gila/Pima Indian Reservation residents to plant and maintain sustainability gardens.

Seeds that are donated from local nurseries are planted and nurtured to maturity in five greenhouses located on the reservation.  Mark works with local Gila/Pima resident…

August 25 – National Banana Split Day

National Banana Split Day

Five Food Finds about Banana Splits

  • The banana split was invented in 1904 at Strickler’s Drug Store in Pennsylvania.
  • A banana split starts with a banana split lengthwise, topped with scoops of ice cream, assorted syrups and finally whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.
  • A banana split is an ice cream-based dessert. In its classic form it is served in a long dish called a boat.
  • A banana is cut in half lengthwise (hence the split) and laid in the dish.
  • There are many variations, but the classic banana split is made with scoops of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream served in a row between the split banana.

Gilbert, AZ Elektrolytes Win – take home the ABDC $100,00 prize

ABDC: Elektrolytes Wins the Title over 8Flavahz! Elektrolytes wins ABDC title over 8Flavahz! (source:screeninvasian.com)

ABDC – The Gilbert, Arizona crew Elektrolytes won the America’s Best Dance Crew title over the HawaiiLos Angeles based 8Flavahz in the America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC) finale on Wednesday on MTV!  Elektrolytes came back from the brink of elimination the previous week to defeat the favored all-female crew 8Flavahz in a night where the guest artist was Katy Perry!

ABDC: Elektrolytes, Worth the Wait.

Elektrolytes took home the $100,00 prize after being together for 6 years but it was certainly worth the wait on ABDC.

The win was not a shocker for the boys from Arizona but after 8Flavahz tallied the most votes last week, the all-girls crew were touted as the favorites.   It was probably fate that Elektrolytes would win ABDC after they defeated heavy favorite Mos Wanted in a dance-off battle from the week before.

The loss for 8Flavahz, the youngest dance crew in ABDC history (from ages 12-17 years old), may have been bitter but time may be on their side.   The young group performed way above expectations, even surprassing another Hawaii-based group Hype 5-0, who made the semi-finals 2 years ago.  8Flavahz represented Hawaii and Los Angeles well and the work of choreographers Marcelo Pacleb and Kelsey Park from the dance studio 24-VII Danceforce was simply outstanding.  We will not hear the last of 8Flavahz, for sure.

ABDC: Elektrolytes Make Comeback in Finale!

The all-male crew were the underdogs in the finale but they didn’t show it in a comeback performance that would eventually prove they deserved to win.  The season finale had Elektrolytes and 8Flavahz dancing from the songs from Katy Perry’s autobiographical/concert film “Part of Me.”

Both crews danced to the Perry’s new single “Wide Awake” which was a great performance.  Then, Elektrolytes invited the crew Poreotix, the season 5 champions, to join them in a dance routine to “Part of Me.”

8Flavahz invited the season 4 champs We Are Heroes to join them on to “T.G.I.F.”   While the performance by 8Flavahz and We Are Heroes was good, the routine by Elektrolytes and Poreotix was better!

 ABDC: Elektrolytes Wins the Title

In the end, after all the blood, sweat, and tears, Elektrolytes wins the ABDC title and a fitting tribute for the Arizona crew that had worked so hard up to that point, beating an all-female crew in 8Flavahz that has youth and high expectations by their side!
